Boxster Charging Issue
Had a friend bring in his Boxster yesterday because he was having a starting issue. After some basic tests, I felt the first step of action was to replace the battery. We did that, but it didn’t solve the problem….but…..it triggered a few more symptoms which pointed to a bad alternator. Before we did the battery, the battery light was not coming on which usually triggered when the alternator goes south. After we did the battery, the battery light came …

Sunday Emergency Service
Got a call Sunday afternoon about a Boxster that had overheated and needed to get back on the road. We had the car towed in and I started tearing into it. This was a car with about 80k miles on it, which had not had it’s major services done……ever from what I can tell. Unfortunately, a $40 drive belt caused about $1,100 in damage. Basically what happened, is the drive belt broke, and the owner kept driving the car even …

Finished RMS and Diff Bearings.
Finished up the RMS and Diff bearings a few nights ago. Still need to knock out a wheel bearing on the right side and it should be ready to go. I think the output shaft having play caused additional stress on the cv axle and bearing on that side as well due to the slight wobble the shaft must have had. New bearings installed, diff in place, and gearbox assembled. Outer diff cover installed. Selector shaft installed. Ahhh much better, …

944 Sloppy Shifter?
If you have a shifter that feels really sloppy in your 944, it is probably because the shift pin is worn out. Generally this is an easy fix, pop in a new shift lever and usually it takes care of it. On occasion though, the actual shift rod will wallow out, which is a little bigger issue. I have been doing some maintenance to the dragon to get it ready to sell, and one thing I have always had was …

996TT Headers
A buddy of mine came across a used set of aftermarket headers for cheap, so we decided to slap them on the other day. Pretty easy job, but it takes a couple of “just the right size” wrenches to get it done. New (used) higher flow headers. Old headers. Pooof! New ones installed.

2001 Boxster Service
This little boxster came in for it’s yearly service and brake job. It was time for pads and rotors all the way around. Unfortunately, the picking crew pulled the incorrect front rotors, so I am waiting on the correct ones which will be here on monday. Actually they weren’t rotors at all, but mislabled CV boots, lol. Oh well, it happens. 70k+ miles is usually pushing the pads and rotors. After that it was an oil change with some fresh …

944 S2 Cab Finished
Finished up the 944 S2 cab the other day, now it is off to be detailed. Removing the belt tension using special tool P-blah blah blah. Old belts off. New belt on. People usually get stumped removing the crank pulley with basic tools. This needs to be removed so you can get the timing belt on/off. The bolt is torqued to 155ft/lbs so you aren’t going to get it with a little wrench. Here is my removal tool, and the …

Back to work
Just got back from a vacation to the grand canyon, quite the trip. Something we have been working on for about a year now, as the journey involved getting there in a 67 cadillac fleetwood. Good times, great friends, and a fairly uneventful trip mechanically. We blogged our journey starting last summer when we picked up the car. It is multiple pages, so you have to click “older posts” at the bottom of the page if you want to start …
